Fall 2020. I was spending $4,000/month on paid ads, sending 2–3 hours of cold emails a day, posting in Facebook groups—and still, the leads had stopped coming.

I was seriously considering shutting down my business and going back to a job.

Despite taking all the “right” actions, nothing was working.

So what do you do when you’re doing the work… but new clients aren’t showing up?

When It’s Clearly Not Working

No leads, no growth—your marketing might be broken, even if you’re putting in effort.

In our Good vs. Bad Marketing series, this part is the easiest to spot:

If you’re not getting clients—your marketing isn’t working.

Marketing is meant to generate revenue—not just cost you money. While short-term ROI isn’t always immediate, if you’re looking at a 4–12 month period and seeing no return… something’s broken.

It’s Like Learning to Drive Stick

You might have all the right tools—but if they’re not working together, the results stall out.

Have you ever learned how to drive a manual transmission?

I learned on my dad’s truck at 16. At first, it felt impossible to time the clutch and gas correctly to avoid stalling.

Marketing can feel the same.

You may have all the right parts: the ads, the website, the emails. But if the timing or alignment is off, nothing moves forward.

Sometimes you launch a beautiful website—but traffic drops because your SEO is misaligned.

Sometimes you’re doing the right things—but in the wrong way.

That was me in 2020.

90% of the Way There… and Still Stuck

Being close to the right strategy doesn’t mean you’re getting the right results.

I was putting in the time.
I had a solid budget.
I was using proven marketing tactics.

But I was missing the quality and context layers that actually attract ideal clients.

When you’re deep in the work, it’s nearly impossible to see where you’re going wrong.

But an outsider? They can spot it instantly.

Why? Because when you’re spending money and taking action, you expect results—which makes it hard to admit when it’s not working.

That expectation becomes a blind spot.

The N-M-B Framework: New – More – Better

A step-by-step lens to evaluate and improve your marketing efforts.

This is something I teach constantly:

  1. New – Start a new strategy: SEO, networking, outreach.
  2. More – Scale volume: more emails, more blog content, more visibility.
  3. Better – Improve quality: sharper copy, better branding, clearer messaging.

Most businesses stop at step 2. But step 3 is where the magic happens.

Spot the Difference: CTA Edition

Let’s look at two website call-to-actions:

#1: Contact us today
#2: Call now and have our team match you with a provider.

See the difference?

  • The first is vague and passive.
  • The second is urgent, specific, and action-oriented.

That’s the power of high-quality marketing.

Brutal Feedback That Changed Everything

Sometimes the most painful advice unlocks the biggest breakthroughs.

After months of spinning my wheels, I finally got on a coaching call.

It was one of the hardest conversations I’ve ever had.

This coach gave me honest (and brutal) feedback on:

  • My visuals
  • My copywriting
  • My lead follow-up
  • My price point
  • My entire offer

It was a lot to take in. But I implemented what he said.

And within one week, I landed 4 new clients.

Every Level Brings a New Layer

Growth often demands a total reset—not just small tweaks.

Here’s the truth:
You’re going to grow, plateau, and hit a point where nothing is working.

That’s not a failure—it’s a signal.

A signal that your systems, marketing, and messaging need to evolve to match your next level.

No one enjoys learning they’ve wasted time or money.
But every successful practice owner I know has stories just like mine.

The difference is—they used the feedback to grow.
